Eileen, thank you so much for keeping tabs on us. We’re having so much fun that we’re talking about seriously expanding our travel plans (in terms of years vs weeks or months).

SP and Ian, I’ve thought a lot about “going back” myself. Still needs some time to percolate. Let me get back to you.

And Neil is in no position to make comments about rewearing childhood clothes, given that it was only a few moves ago that we both finally got rid of clothes we still had from high school and college!

You can’t cross the same river twice. You’re not quite the same person you were then, neither are the people you know, and it’s not quite the same place; you don’t have to have the same integration.

You get to do it the way you think it should be done, the way you are now. you don’t have to go back to your old life any more than you have to re-wear the clothes from your childhood.

Why reintigrate. Treat it as another place you’re visiting for a while, but which you won’t stay at forever (or perhaps, even that long…)

“You can’t go home again.” Hmm, I’m coming to grips with a wicked case of that myself. I’ve been away almost a full year now and I really do worry about the day when I return. How will I reintegrate, etc. . One of my road buddies returned home two months ago and he’s already miserable. Oy. I’m ruined for normality, I tell you. Sounds like you two are as well! :-)

We couldn’t agree more

Yet, at the same time, it was far too short a stay in Charleston. We hardly saw a fraction of the people we wanted to–although the couple of visits we did get were excellent. We hope to do a better, more raucous version next winter.

Perhaps “you can’t go home again” is only in the sense that “you can’t cross the same river twice.” It mostly looks like the same place (with some horrifying subtractions in Downtown Charleston) but the flow seems mellower and smoother.
