You got “The Red Balloon”? We got “Old Yeller.” I am completely jealous of you.

And no, I was a girl, John. Girls were not to be trusted with gadgets.

I was disgusted by the sexism in elementary school. That’s why, when the teachers asked for some “big strong boys” to volunteer to haul chairs and desks and things around, I always volunteered, and SHAMED them into letting me help. Oh yeah, and I was always the smallest, puniest, sickliest kid in the class. And there I’d be, dragging a school desk down the hallway like an anemic ant.

Of course, since I married Neil, I am no longer allowed to carry ANYTHING (tell that man he’s so chivalrous he’s sentencing me to certain osteoporosis) and I am more than making up for lost geek opportunities with our fabulous belated gadget collection.

I figured you as one of those “special” kids, Shaula, who could always be counted on to save the day with that little bit of scotch tape. You were the one who always made sure we got to see the end of “The Red Balloon” whenever the film snapped on the reel-to-reel machine.

For the millions of us kids who would rather watch ANYTHING, than continue social studies, I thank you.
