First Napless Day
I have some good news to share, although it is more about my health journey than our geographical adventure:
Today is the first day of the trip that I have stayed awake all day without a nap.
Although Fairfax is certainly warm and mildly humid, distancing ourselves from Richmond by even just 2 hours worth of driving already seems to be making a significant positive impact on my health. Hurray!
I have been sleeping 12 to 14 hours a night, with a 2 to 4 hour nap each afternoon. Best of all, unlike the unannounced collapses to which I was prone in Richmond, all of my sleeping seems to be restful, and dare I say “normal.”
The few small patches of eczema I developed through the last week of packing and moving out of Richmond are improving by leaps and bounds every day. I feel like this sleep is about my body going into overdrive with healing (hurray! hurray!) rather than shutting down out of total exhaustion the way I did in Richmond.
In other words, we are feeling strongly vindicated that our gut instincts were correct about this trip: that we would hopefully see immediate improvement in my health upon leaving Richmond.
We’re excited to keep me awake long enough to actually get some visiting in, as we know some great people around Fairfax from when we worked here in 2003.
Most of all, it is incredibly exciting to think I may actually rebuild my strength, enjoy this trip, and possibly even ultimately get some measure of my health back.

Sleep, health, and “fattening up”… all good things indeed! (The latter apparently being bumped up to Ein in Neil’s opinion.) Maybe when you get closer to my side of the country we can get together again. At least let me know when you’re near those Dallas peeps! Be safe and well friends.

Hullo, handsome!
I don’t know that we’ll get as far south as Dallas on this trip, we’re thinking more about heading north and west.
On the other hand, we are definitely overdue to visit friends in California. I’m not sure if that will happen as part of this trip, or once we find a new home base, but either way we’re looking forward to getting out to your neck of the woods soon.
We will get to that end by fall. We have a soft target of Albuquerque. We’ve already promised Jason & Kelly (they are wandering around here, too, it seems) a visit when we get that close. And hey, hub-to-hub travel is cheap, so you may wind up plotting to remove us
Yeah, wandering semi-aimlessly. Ambling, more like. But I keep running into walls and the coffee table! Sheesh! You think our host would at least turn on the lights in here!
Maybe… Shaula is part salmon and she needs to head back to her spawning ground up north of here? No. Wait… you guys spawned right here in San Francisco in some ill-begotten hostel on Broadway! Doesn’t that count for a re-visit?
Perhaps not. But for the time being that’s just as well. California is on fire (literally this time) and the Bay Area is having a heat wave like nobody’s business. And I thought you were going to AZ or NM anyway? What’s this “up north and west” stuff? Who is plotting your course there? If you make it to Seattle I would love to haul on up there for a couple of days to see you two.
At any rate, I’m a-rooting for the two of you. Please let me know if you need anything along the way. I will gladly send all as long as I don’t necessarily face imprisonment.
